August
I left Cornwall Canoes at 1700, and was rigged up and ready to launch at 1800. It was the last hour or so of the push and the sea was very calm. – perfect evening for it.

Bob was already on the water and even from the shore I could see him pulling in Mackerel with every other cast. That’s the bait sorted.....

I had planned to fish this bay for a while and had heard numerous reports from divers of big bass lurking in amongst the kelp.
The location is a sort of horse-shoe shaped bay with a combination of sand and reef bottom. We were not paddling out far so we left the 13 foot boats at home and opted for the convenience of the Mini X.
I was soon out mid-bay with Bob and first cast was into a fish. Mackerel, Mackerel and more Mackerel. We tried fishing various depths, but they were everywhere, deep and near the surface.

We decided to bait up and fish the bottom a bit further out. We caught a number of Pollock just above the bottom, mostly small, but a couple around the 3lb mark.
I decided to try my luck in close to the rocks on the West point of the bay.
Lots of rocky outcrops and small reefs, so well worth exploring more closely when we’ve got more daylight.
I was trolling in close to the cliffs when I had a solid bite, and it started taking line. By the time I grabbed the rod from the rear flush mount it had gone!
I circled back around and paddled slowly over the same area. I drifted over a small reef section and had another decent bite. I connected and brought this little fella on board.

Not big, but he put up a great fight on my light gear. Cleanly hooked and put straight back.
By now light was fading so rigged up for bottom again, and dropped some more fresh mackerel bait over the side. More Mackerel and Pollock. The Pollock got a bit bigger as it got darker, but nothing of any great size. Time to head in…..
Cracking evening for it, warm & calm.
