December
Checked the tides and weather forecast last night, and looked like a good day today to go after our first River Tamar Cod of the winter. Myself and Bob met Adam and the 3 of us made our way over the bridge and into Plymouth. We decided to target Cod at the mouth of the Tamar estuary in deep water and strong currents.
We launched at Devonport on the Plymouth side of the Tamar at about 9 am. The conditions looked ideal....

We paddled out to the mouth of the Tamar and fished the bottom of the tide at the entrance to the estuary off Devil's Point. Lots of little rattles but nothing substantial.
The Northerly wind picked up and was blowing straight down the valley and was certainly fresh, so we paddled up river slightly for shelter. We'd been fishing for about 4 hours, Adam had landed a decent size Pouting, but me and Bob had no joy.
The tide was pushing hard now, and Bob shouted me that he had just had his first proper bite of the day. And then he hooked into something more promising.....

The 10lb class Maxximus was giving fantastic sport....

What would it be, doggie???, Huss??? or .......

It had been worth the wait, Bob was well happy with his first Codling of this winter.
We continued to fish for another 2 hours, myself and Adam hoping to join Bob with a Cod or Codling catch.

Unfortunately there were no more Codling to be had. We had been on the water for nearly 7 hours and I was about to blank, and on the last drift of the day, I hooked this little fella...

We made our way back and got off the water about 4pm as the sun was getting ready to go down. Adam weighed Bob's Codling at just under 4lb, so that was diner sorted...

Put him down bigmouth, you don't know where he's been.

We got off the water as the sun was setting. Great days sport, and a happy old man. Bob's round...
Here are some more images of us fishing the Tamar Winter 2008.......
