The Mysto is Ocean Kayak's answer to the Feel Free Nomad and the Perception Scooter sit on tops. At approx 3m in length (or 9' 9" in old money) it is the ideal size for an all-round Sit on Top Kayak. It has a solid feel in terms of build quality and offers good overall performance. The thing that really sets the Mysto aside from other kayaks in this category is the higher paddling position. You tend to sit 'on top' of the Mysto, more so than with the likes of the Nomad or Scooter. Whether you prefer this paddling position or not, it certainly makes for a slightly different paddling experience.

Features

Solid Side Handles - much better than the soft handles on some other Ocean Kayak sit on tops. The Mysto side handles are also positioned at the correct point fo balance on the kayak making for an easy one person lift.

Front & Rear Handles - Again, solid handles are much better and make carrying easy. Moulded Fins & Keel Line - The hull has a defined keel line which offers good straight line tracking. The hull also has two moulded fins. This helps to prevent the hull sliding out on the face of a wave. (Click the image below for a larger image).

Keel Strip - At the back of the keel line there is a plastic strip that will take the brunt of the ware on the hull. This can be replaced easily when worn out.

Seat - The Mysto comes as standard with a seat. It is comortable and easy to fit/remove.

Drainage - 3 pairs of scupper drainage holes along the length of the kayak allow water to drain easily: 2 in the foot well, 2 where you sit and 2 in the rear storage.

Thigh Straps - A useful addition to many sit on tops, and a must if you want to take the Mysto into some surf. Rear Storage - a reasonably sized storage well in the rear of the kayak will happily accomodate a medium size dry bag (20 - 30ltr), and the bungees will help prevent your kit from escaping.

Opinion

Of course a review is always someone's opinion - here's mine. I like the higher paddling position of the Mysto. I allows for an easy paddling style. It also allows you to lean out with your paddle whilst surfing, making turns and carves easier.

Three of us took three different sit on top kayaks out in some small surf at Pentewan Sands in Cornwall. It was a unanimous decision that the Mysto performed the best in the surf. The higher paddling position also makes this a better option for smaller paddlers, particularly children as they can reach the water with the paddle blade more easily than on other models and are less likely to hit their hands on the side of the kayak.

The Mysto is fine for touring short distances, although if touring is what you are mainly looking for and you're less interested in playing in surf then I ithink there are better options.

For longer periods on the kayak you may feel a little more comfortable sitting lower down like you would in models such as the Feel Free Nomad. The Nomad also has a bit more storage space in the rear and comes with the options of additional storage hatches.

I would certainly recommend the Ocean Kayak Mysto for someone looking for a true all round fun family sit on top. It paddles well on flat water, its great fun in the surf and suitable for children and adults alike.
