Perception Prodigy & Vista

2016 Review Update

Perception UK have made the best open cockpit tandem kayaks from the beginning. Nothing has changed so the best boats are still the Prodigy and Vista.

Tandem Open Cockpit Kayak

There are two open cockpit tandem kayaks on the market that we rate and stock.

The Perception Vista

Perception Vista

The Perception Prodigy II

Perception Prodigy II

Everything written here can be applied to either Perception Prodigy or Vista.Construction, materials and top flight build quality is the same on both models.

Open cockpit kayaks are very simple to paddle and there are no “capsize entrapment issues”.

The main differences between Vista and Prodigy are length and weight. Vista being longer is therefore a fraction quicker through the water can take slightly lumpier conditions and lug a bit more kit. Speed is a variable and depends on the paddlers abilities and fitness. Two La La paddlers with pasta arms will never be very quick whereas a pair of vein busting Royal Marines will be surprisingly fast.

Here Codger and the Panda (aka Fridge Fairy) demonstrate paddling in time - not!

Both models have adjustable foot stops and the position of both seats is also adjustable. With this combination of adjustment It is very rare we are unable to get paddlers comfortable in either of these boats. Mutts of all sizes feature quite often in Prodigy and Vista paddlers requirements and why not too.

Prodigy Rental Seat

All seats are fully adjustable along the side

When the weather warms up we will take Phil and Ambrose paddling but as you can see from the “Panda Prodigy Video” there are no leaves on the trees (it is still February). The Fridge Fairy is wearing her Panda hat to defeat the cold and it is surprising just how high a Panda’s testicles sit.

The Vista was designed by Perceptions UK team in Sussex. Launched a few years ago the boat has gone on to be one of the most popular privately owned and rental open cockpit kayaks in Europe. Vista is the quickest boat in its class and there isn’t a better boat for open cockpit kayak touring.

The Perception Vista is a fast kayak

The Vista is a very popular Open Cockpit Kayak

The Prodigy is the newest addition to the Perception tandem kayak range. Many of you will remember the Kiwi 2 and Kiwi 3 and possibly have paddled them. Prodigy incorporates the styling lines first used on the Perception Expression and adds a real touch of class to the look.

The newest addition, the Prodigy II 14.5

The paddling experience in Prodigy is light years better than that of Kiwi 2 and Kiwi 3 design and manufacture have simply moved on.  The size and weight of Prodigy makes it slightly easier to car top and transport than Vista. It is perfect for personal use as well as fleets.

The name Prodigy came from the dictionary definition – something marvellous; something very impressive or amazing. This just about sums up how many of us feel about kayaking and canoeing.

Final Blurb
Prodigy and Vista statistics above show cockpit dimensions are similar. Vista has more bow and stern than Prodigy but at 15’11” is still shorter than many Canadian Canoes.
Like the Twin Otter paddlers can often be seen paddling, day dreaming, bird watching,  fishing, drifting, dozing on calm peaceful waters – and why not!
